There’s leather sofas, and then there’s Italian leather sofas.
You have probably experienced Italian leather more times than you know. Most of the leather used for upholstery in luxury cars is Italian in origin, and the plushest leather sofas nearly always use Italian leather as well.
The reason people love Italian leather is because of its authenticity. Italy has produced leather since the Middle Ages and Florence is known as the world capital of leather with more leather makers per capita than anywhere else.
Italian leather is famous for its quality and prestige. No two leathers are the same, and although quality varies between makers like anywhere else in the world, Italy is the most consistent maker of high-quality leather goods. You know that when it’s Italian, the leather is going to be beautiful. You can count on it.
What’s so special about Italian leather?
Much of the leather made in Italy is handmade by craftspeople in workshops. Leatherwork requires many years of apprenticeship to master. The final product you see in your beautiful sofa is the manifestation of this journey.
Even where leather is produced on a production line to boost manufacturing output, in Italy the tanning of leather is always performed by hand.
Italian leather is authentic, and Italy consistently produces the finest leather goods. From the quality of the leather hide to the skilled tanning process, leather makers in Italy take immense pride in their work. For many people, this is their livelihood, and if there’s a way to assure quality, it’s to give people pride in their work.
Made in Italy - the ultimate mark of quality
Italian leather is known as the very best in the leather industry. This is the result of its lineage and consistent quality.
In the fashion industry, luxury brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton only use Italian leather because it is recognisable as a mark of quality. This is why full grain leather (the Holy Grail of leather) nearly always carries the ‘Made in Italy’ stamp.
Sofas are a little bit different. Not all sofas use Italian leather. Italian leather is more expensive than leather produced elsewhere in the world. However, the quality of the hide and the tanning is definitely worth the money in a sofa. Sofas in Italian leather look and feel beautiful, with a perceptible sense of prestige.
Italian leather makes the most beautiful sofas
Whether a sofa uses top grain leather or the more expensive full grain leather, so long as it’s Italian, you can be sure of a high-quality product.
The distinctive smell and natural markings of Italian leather are the main reasons why people choose it over cheaper leathers. People love the smell, look and feel of leather made in Italy. There is nothing else like it.
Genuine Italian leather sofas are also extremely durable. The leather itself is thick and supple, making it perfect for a lifetime of use.
Making sure Italian leather is genuine Italian leather
One of the unfortunate by-products of Italian leather being so well-known is it is also counterfeited in volume. Leathers from India, China and Bangladesh are sometimes marked as Italian Leather and sold as genuine.
There are a few ways to tell if Italian leather is genuine Italian leather. The stamp “Made in Italy” means at least two of the main processing steps of producing the leather were carried out in Italy. This is the first identification marker. The second marker is the label “Vera Pella” which is a guarantee label that certifies the traceability of the origin.
The easiest way to verify the authenticity of Italian leather, however, is to purchase goods from brands and manufacturers who verify the leather for you. Sofas and leather jackets are good examples of products with such checks.
